Another law enforcement officer in Harford County dies this month

ABERDEEN, Md. - A black drape and broken heart continue to cover the Aberdeen Police Department.  Now, it's meant to honor Det. Mark Franklin who solved several cases as a crime lab technician for 13 years.

"Although he lost the battle, he taught others in the process of how they could carry themselves," said Aileen Franklin, Det. Franklin's wife.

Det. Franklin became aware of more frequent headaches in January.  He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that spread throughout his body and into his brain.

How he lived is the focus of his family.

"He never once complained.  The nurses, the doctors, over 30 different doctors treated him and they all said the same thing.  He never complained," said Franklin.

His mobile crime lab is parked outside of police headquarters, where grieving is now part of the job.

On September 8th, Det. Charles Armetta fell 47 feet off an exit ramp of Interstate 95.  The 29 year old was on a party bus returning from a trip to Washington, DC.

"The stress is really working on these guys.  And the sorrow cause these guys are really tight with each other," said Lt. Tony Burke, Aberdeen Police Dept.

And in the past month, the Harford County Sheriff's Office lost Cpl. Charles Licato when his cruiser slammed into a tree.  Sgt. Ian Loughran, 43, died of a heart attack following Licato's funeral.

Former Harford County Sheriff Ted Moyer also died this month.  He was 83.

Badges will remain covered longer than Aberdeen Police, a small department of 40, has ever experienced.

"I totally believe and embrace the fact that the brotherhood lives on," said Franklin.
