ST. MICHAELS, Md. (WMAR) -
The Maryland State Fire Marshal is trying to figure out what sparked a deadly fire in Saint Michaels early this morning.
At about 12:30 a.m., crews responded to the 200 block of North Street for reports of a fire. The remains of an adult male victim were discovered by firefighters in the bedroom of the home as crews worked to extinguish the flames.
It only took 15 minutes for crews to extinguish the fire, but the remainder of the home suffered heat and smoke damage throughout. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $45,000.
The identity of the man has not yet been determined.
Officials say one working smoke alarm was found on a countertop in the kitchen.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
