Two, including pastor, die in Ocean City church fire

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Two men have been killed by a fire at an Ocean City church, officials have confirmed.

One of the men who died was the pastor of St. Paul's by-the-Sea church, the Episcopal Diocese of Easton said.

"It is with great sadness that we share with you that our brother in Christ, the Rev. David Dingwall, has died. Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon him," reads a statement on the Diocese Facebook page .

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

ORIGINAL -- A fire inside of an Ocean City church killed one man and injured two others, a spokeswoman for the Town of Ocean City said.

"Today was a very tragic day for our community," said Ocean City Fire Chief Chris Larmore in a release.  "We are thankful for the numerous agencies that assisted us during our response and especially thankful for all of the public safety personnel who helped prevent this fire from claiming more lives."

Firefighters responded to St. Paul's by-the-Sea church at 302 North Baltimore Avenue shortly after 9:25 a.m. The fire was upgraded to three-alarms, before responders managed to get the blaze under control shortly after arrival. 

A woman was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center before being sent to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.  Another man was taken to Atlantic General Hospital in critical condition.

Identities of the victims were not released as of 6 p.m. Tuesday.

"Initial damage assessments indicate significant fire damage of the first and second floor office, in addition to smoke and overhaul damage throughout the first floor of the rectory building," the release states. "The worship center and Red Doors Community Center, which are located within St. Paul's by the Sea, experienced minimal to no significant damage."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
