A new visitor center honoring the legacy of Harriet Tubman opens Saturday in Church Creek in Dorchester County.

The 15,0000 square-foot center is a joint venture between the Midland Park Service and the National Park Service.

Visitors who come see the new history attraction can learn about  Tubman's story and how she used the underground railroad to free slaves in the 1800's.

Hundreds of slaves were freed via the underground railroad network. Many of those who helped orchestrate the slaves to freedom only did it one time. Most of the time they were unsuccessful and when caught the penalty was imprisonment or most likely death. That did not deter Tubman.

The Harriet Tubman Visitor Center is just a starting point for a 125-mile driving tour through Maryland's scene eastern shore.

There will be several grand opening events going on throughout the weekend.
