Fire officials are currently on the scene of a fatal fire in the 1800 block of Appleton Road in Elkton.

State Fire Marshals say a Delmarva Power Company employee saw fire coming from the back of a two-story single-family home at approximately 6:50 a.m. Friday and called police.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming from the second floor and made their way inside.

A man was found dead in a second floor bedroom, but rapid flames forced firefighters out of the home before they could pull the man to safety.

Approximately 60 firefighters from Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania worked to extinguish the two-alarm blaze. Officials say the home has since collapse and workers are continuing to apply water to stubborn hotspots.

Firefighters will attempt to locate the victim once the structure is deemed safe to enter, officials say. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will then determine the victim's identity and cause of death.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Appleton Road at Jackson Hall School Road in Cecil County was closed Friday morning because of the fire, but has since reopened.
