The Buddy For Life Shelter in Elkton closed its doors Thursday, and ABC2's own Kelly Swoope added a four-legged friend to her family.

Swoope's daughter, Taylor, rescued a dog named Dex and announced the adoption on Facebook.

"Our family lended a helping hand. We added a new member," she said. "Taylor saved a life and her reward is her first furever four legged friend."

Back in May, Cecil County ended its contract with the privately-run Buddy For Life Shelter. The shelter announced it would euthanize any animals not adopted before the shelter shut down.

However, thanks to the volume of people who showed up at the shelter, all of the pets were either adopted or relocated.

Cecil County will begin running its own shelter in Chesapeake City in July.
