A man and a woman are dead following a police-involved shooting at New Eastern Inn in Elkton Tuesday morning, state police said.
Brandon Jones, 25, and Chelsea M. Porter, 25, both from Dover, Delaware, were shot and killed by police who came to the inn to serve them warrants.
Both were wanted on warrants by Delaware State Police for four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession with intent to deliver heroin, possession of heroin, possession with intent to deliver marijuana and other drug and gun charges.
State police spokesman Greg Shipley said Jones and Porter were inside the motel on Pulaski Highway when state police and the Cecil County Sheriff's Office arrived to serve the warrant shortly before 10 a.m.
After knocking on the door of the hotel room, officers ordered the people inside to surrender. An officer saw the man inside the room pick up a handgun and move toward the door.
According to the preliminary investigation, several minutes passed as police continued to yell commands to the suspects in the room. Without warning, the man later identified as Jones stepped outside the room onto the walkway and pointed a handgun at police. Seconds later, the woman identified as Porter stepped outside the room and also pointed a handgun at officers.
Both were shot and killed, and pronounced dead at the scene.
There was no third suspect involved, contrary to original reports from the scene. No police officers were injured in the shooting.
"State police crime scene techs are here, our state police homicide unit will be conducting an investigation as they do in police-involved shooting, we don’t know how many shots were fired, we don’t know the answers to a lot of questions at this point but that’s all part of the ongoing investigation," Shipley said.
State police are working to determine how many police officers fired and what departments they are from.
One of the officers who fired is a state trooper, who has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
