Woman killed in Mt. Airy house fire

A woman was killed Sunday following a house fire in Carroll County.

According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, the fire broke out around 8:15 a.m. on the 2800 block Flag Marsh Road in Mount Airy. Officials say the woman was found dead inside the home.

It took 100 firefighters, including units from Carroll, Howard, and Montgomery counties about 40 minutes to control the blaze. One firefighter sustained a burn to the leg area when he went through the weakened floor. The firefighter was treated and released from the hospital. No smoke alarms were found in the home. The home sustained extensive damage.

The fire marshal's office says fire started in the living room of the home, which is located down a narrow, unpaved driveway, but the cause is under investigation. Damage is estimated at about $200,000.

The American Red Cross has been called to assist the family if needed.
