WESTMINSTER, Md. - Medics flew two people to Maryland Shock Trauma after a fiery crash in Westminster on Friday morning.
Maryland State Police say the crash happened at 3 a.m. on MD 97, just north of MD 26.
Once officers arrived on the scene, they found the crash involving Corolla driven by 18-year-old Casey Marie Bellofatto of Sykesville and an Accord driven by 63-year-old Christine Elizabeth Stamm of Westminster.
Police say the Toyota was going south on MD 97 and the Honda was going north at the time of the crash. The Toyota crossed the double yellow line and hit the Honda head on.
The Toyota then went off the roadway and overturned before catching on fire. It is unknown if speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
Howard County Police Corporal Craig Ream was on his way home from work when he came upon the crash and saw the Toyota on fire.
Corporal Ream and Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy Corporal Gunnar Burdt were able to get Bellofatto out of the vehicle. Fire crews used hydraulic rescue tools to rescue Stamm from the Honda.
Corporal Ream is a member of the Howard County Police Tactical team. Corporal Ream crawled under the hood of the car to the windshield where he saw a small opening. He squeezed his way in through a hole and found the girl trapped inside. Ream grabbed the girl and crawled back through the hole, dragging her with him.
He was dragging her up a hill away from the burning car when Corporal Burdt.
Both Bellofatto and Stamm were flown to Shock Trauma for treatment. Corporal Ream was treated for burns to his hands at Howard County hospital.
Bellofatto is listed in critical condition and Stamm is listed in serious condition.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to call Trooper First Class James Lantz at 410-386-3000.
