For 90 local businesses in Carroll County, Saturday, Nov. 26 isn't just Small Business Saturday, it's the beginning of shopping small for eight days.

Shop Small Eight Days a Week begins Saturday and runs through Dec. 4. The program aims to bring customers to shops that they haven't seen before.

"It's all about shopping small, shopping local," Missie Wilcox, a marketing consultant for the city of Westminster said. "We want to get people to try different things."

Here's how it works:

  • Get your passport from any of the 90 participating businesses
  • Make a purchase at any eight of those business from Nov. 25 - Dec. 4 and get a sticker for proof of purchase (no minimum purchase required)
  • Turn completed passport in to any Library or Town Hall by Dec. 5
  • 10 winners will be picked at random to receive a $100 gift certificate redeemable at any of the participating businesses

The participating businesses range from boutiques and markets to restaurants and bars. The shops are located in seven Carroll County neighborhoods - Hampstead, Mount Airy, New Windsor, Sykesville, Taneytown, Union Bridge and Westminster.

This is the first year of Shop Small Eight Days a Week. It was created to promote shopping small. Shopping Carroll County's downtowns gives an organic experience of small town history and charm unlike any other main streets in Maryland.

"You feel like you're thrown back in time in any of these towns," Wilcox said. "It's worth the drive and it's not as far as you think."
