WESTMINSTER, Md. - A 66-year-old man was struck and killed while trying to cross Route 140 in Westminster late Wednesday night.
Maryland State Police said Harry Wesley Dowden Jr. was wearing dark clothing and was not using the crosswalk when he stepped out onto the road around 10 p.m. Police said a vehicle driven by Candice Nichole Helm, 34, was traveling northbound on Route 140 in the area of Route 27 when Dowden entered the travel portion of the roadway from the right shoulder.
Dowden was pronounced dead at the scene as Helm remained at the scene. Police said speed and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this collision.
Police said the road was closed for about two hours after the accident. Also, police said the accident provides a reminder for pedestrians to use the appropriate crosswalks and wear bright clothing when it is dark outside.
