The excitement bubbled in the exam room at the Humane Society of Carroll County. The staff couldn't hide their smiles, and even Oprah the dog seemed to know something big was about to happen.

This was the day Oprah would get her new paw and a new family.

We first told you about how Oprah came to the shelter emaciated, injured and terrified of humans. The staff and volunteers worked to get her healthy both physically and mentally and over the course of several months she became a different dog.

The one problem was what to do about her back right leg and missing paw, which the staff believes was a result of neglect. They think her leg got caught in a wire fence, and the paw rotted off.

Instead of amputation, they reached out to D&J Medical, a local prosthetics company. John Beeler, a prosthetist with the company, eagerly took on the case, and did the work for free.

Within a couple of weeks, Beeler had Oprah's new brace and prosthetic paw and couldn't wait to fit her.  For the first 10 minutes after he put it on her leg, she didn't know what to make of it.  She would touch it to the ground and quickly snap it back in the air.

Beeler and the vet would hold her good back leg up, forcing her to put weight on the prosthetic, showing her she could trust it to support her.

Then they took her outside, and Oprah nearly forget she had the brace on her leg. Beeler said he was very pleased with the results and couldn't have asked for anything better.

And if that wasn't enough, this day would also be Oprah's last day at the shelter. Beeler knew he and his family would be the best fit for her.  He says he can adjust her brace and prosthetic as needed and make sure she's comfortable.

Beeler has Oprah going to a trainer regularly and hopes to register her as a therapy dog.
