Officers honored for valor in Rt. 97 crash

Law enforcement officers in Carroll County were recognized Monday for their life-saving efforts in an incident just outside of Sykesville in January.

A ceremony was held at the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department's social hall at 10:30 a.m. where Howard County Police Department Cpl. Craig Ream and Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputy Cpl. Gunnar Burdt were honored for their actions following a serious accident along Route 97.

Ream was on his way home from work when he came upon the early-morning crash in which a Toyota Corolla crossed the double yellow line, hit another car and caught fire.

Ream and Burdt rescued an 18-year-old woman from the flames and managed the scene until EMS arrived.

Attending the ceremony were Carroll County Sheriff Kenneth L. Tregoning, Howard County Chief of Police William McMaho9n, Delegate Susan Krebs and the board of Carroll County commissioners.
