The Mount Airy Town Council seeks public comment on a proposal to allow the sale of guns from homes.

A man named Michael Wonsala, a Mount Airy resident, is petitioning for the right to sell antique and historic guns from his home.

In his petition, titled "'Let Freedom Ring' while Allowing Small Businesses to Thrive!!" Wonsala describes himself as the owner of a 40-year home business dedicated to the restoration of antique and rare firearms.

"I have submitted a special exception appeal application to obtain permission to continue my practice within my new home," he said."My interests are acquiring, restoring and internet selling Civil War, WWI, WWII, and Korean War Firearms. The pieces are considered by most as works of art."

The proposal would create a zoning change - allowing the sale of firearms in residential zoning districts through means of internet, arms length of mail order transactions.

Allowing these sales would call for the creation of standards to promote safety and lessen the impact on surrounding residents.

The meeting will run from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5 at Town Hall, located at 110 South Main St. in Mount Airy.
