WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College senior Jasmine McCormick received the Legion of Valor award Tuesday, one of only seven awarded nationwide out of 5,500 total cadets, according to a news release from the school.
Only .1 percent of cadets receive the honor from the Green Terror Battalion President's Review for Army ROTC cadets each year. The award is given to those who exemplify outstanding military, academic and leadership skills.
McCormick is the first recipient of the award from McDaniel's Green Terror Battalion, one of the oldest ROTC programs in the nation. She represents the 4th Brigade, which includes Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina and South Carolina.
A native of Antioch, Calif., McCormick is studying psychology and Arabic and Middle Eastern studies. She is captain of the track team, plays the saxophone in McDaniel's Jazz Band and participates in multiple honor societies.
McCormick completed Airborne School and Air Assault School in addition to teaching Senegalese soldiers English and helping build an orphanage.
Additional awards were given to cadets from McDaniel, Hood College and Mt. St. Mary’s University.
McDaniel has consistently been recognized among the top 15 percent of Military Friendly Schools in the nation.
