Girl, 16, killed in Carroll County crash

Speed, weather factors in crash

GAMBER, Md. - The fresh scars on the tree and its dangling bark made it easy for Lisa Dussart and her daughter to find the crash scene.

"It was bad.  We had a lot of police here, and we just didn't know what had happened until this morning," said Dussart.

It would be much more difficult to find the words to comfort her daughter over the loss of her close friend.

"You just hold them.  You just hold them and tell them that you love them.  It's all you can do... that you'll be there for them."

Investigators with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office say 16-year old Rita Medeiros was driving northbound on Poole Road in a downpour when she lost control of her Toyota Corolla, veering off of the road and wrapping it around a tree.

"Emergency crews from the Gamber Community Fire Company responded to the scene and found the driver deceased from injuries sustained as a result of the collision," said Major Phil Kasten of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, "Heavy rain and speed are considered are considered factors or are believed to be factors at this time."

Bearing that out, at the scene, you can see where struck the tree with such force that it not only smashed the windshield, but sent some of the shards of glass more than 50 feet away in a dormant corn field.

Rita was a Westminster High School student and a member of Grace Fellowship Chapel in Westminster who touched many lives and now her friends, classmates and fellow church members are struggling to cope with the loss of her own.

"Second one this year that she's lost---second friend," said Dussart.

If you witnessed the crash or have any information about the accident, you're asked to call Corporal Jeff Miller of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office at 410-386-2900.
