Varsity swimmer killed in car crash

SPARKS, Md. (WMAR) - A McDonogh School varsity swimmer has died after a car he was driving hit a tree on Greenspring Avenue.

Police say Alec John Cosgarea, 17, of Owings Mills died after his 2006 Ford Fusion hit a tree at about 10:20 p.m. Monday.

Cosgarea was headed north on Greenspring Ave and approaching Highview Drive when he lost control of the car and went off the road and slammed into a tree.

Cosgarea was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma where he died.

Police believe speed was a factor in the crash.

In August 2011, Cosgarea joined ABC 2 News to show off his talent and creativity in making things out of duct tape. To see that story click here .
