Two young men were hurt Sunday after they apparently went over the Prettyboy Dam.
At about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Baltimore County firefighters were called to the Prettyboy Dam for a report of an injured person. A witness told firecrews at least one person had just gone over the dam. Fire personnel climbed down to the bottom of the dam, a steep climb down trails and numerous steps.
At the bottom of the dam, crews found an adult male patient, visibly injured, who led him to a friend. The friend was conscious but seriously injured.
Fire personnel found damaged kayaks at the base of the dam. The Baltimore Environmental Police, responsible for enforcing watershed laws and regulations, also were dispatched and were the first on scene; their investigation of this incident continues.
The more seriously injured patient was taken to Shock Trauma by helicopter. Fire personnel carried him in a Stokes basket from the bottom of the dam to the top of the dam, where the helipcopter had landed. Rescuers used a rope hauling system to assist with the carry during the first and most treacherous part of the climb to the top of the dam.
The other man was taken by ambulance to the trauma center of York Hospital in Pennsylvania.
