Student found dead on UMBC campus

Update: Police have just identified the student as 17 year-old Eric Askins of Hollywood, MD. Askins was a freshman at UMBC.

Baltimore County Police are investigating after a student was found dead on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, officers were called to the campus in the 1000 block of Hilltop Circle in Baltimore for a student found unconscious. He was declared dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Police say that though there was no evidence of foul play but will be investigated by the homicide unit due to the sudden and unexplained death.

The student’s body will be sent to the Medical Examiner for an autopsy. 

The school released the following statement Sunday: 

"Early Sunday morning, we learned of the death of one of our students. The student was found unresponsive in a residence hall room and pronounced deceased by the Baltimore County Police. There are no obvious signs of foul play. The State Medical Examiner is conducting an investigation to determine the manner and cause of death. We do not have any further information at this time.
