Three inmates in the Baltimore County Detention Center have tested positive for Salmonella, county officials said Thursday.
Deborah Richardson, director of the Baltimore County Detention Center, has removed all workers from the kitchen, and has replaced them with temporary workers.
"With due diligence and continued collaboration with the Department of Health, I am confident that this matter will resolve in a timely manner to prevent additional cases of this nature," Richardson said in a statement.
People infected with the bacteria salmonella can develop diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, fever, and/or headache. People can be exposed to Salmonella through consuming contaminated food or water, or contact with the feces of infected people or animals.
Salmonella can be found in foods such as raw meats and poultry, eggs, and unpasteurized milk products. Infected people can also have Salmonella in their feces and spread it to others for several weeks or more, even after the symptoms resolve.
