The Towson University Pi-Upsilon chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon has been temporarily suspended after allegations of an off-campus hazing incident, according to a spokesperson.
University officials, Baltimore County Police and officials from Tau Kappa Epsilon are investigating the allegations of an off-campus hazing incident that reportedly left one student hospitalized.
According to Baltimore County Police, the victim remains hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon.
“We are aware of an off-campus incident involving a Towson University student that is currently under joint investigation by the Towson University Police Department and the Baltimore County Police Department,” Ray Feldmann, a spokesperson for Towson University said in an email. “Privacy issues prevent us for providing any additional details at this time. Towson University takes any allegation of hazing very seriously and deals with it swiftly. Our hazing policy is very clear: Hazing is against the law and is strictly prohibited at Towson University.”
Alex Baker, the chief information officer for Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity said that the allegations do not align with the fraternity's core values.
"At this time, we are investigating this alleged incident at Towson University. Tau Kappa Epsilon does not condone hazing in any form," Baker said in a statement. "These allegations do not align with our values of love, charity, and esteem. We have temporarily suspended the Pi-Upsilon chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon. We are fully cooperating with the university and police investigations. If these allegations are found to be true, we will address the allegation swiftly and with appropriate action."
No additional details about incident or the victim’s identity have been released.
By Wednesday afternoon, word had not yet reached all corners of the campus. Still, a number of students expressed similar reactions to ABC2.
"I've heard of incidents like it before so I'm not really surprised about it. I'm just surprised I guess it ended with him in the hospital," Melanie Nicholls, a sophomore, said.
“We have been requested by Towson University Police to assist with an investigation of an incident involving a Towson University student,” Corporal John Wachter said in a release. “Information on our involvement in the investigation will be released when it becomes available.”
