LOCHERN, Md. - A road worker was hit by a vehicle on the shoulder of the I-695 Inner Loop Friday and killed.
Shortly after 2 p.m. Maryland State Police were dispatched to the area of I-695 near Liberty Road.
Officials with Maryland State Police confirm the worker, identified as John C. Kahl, 54, of Benjamin Park Drive in Port Deposit, was struck and killed on the right shoulder just before exit 19.
Police say a 2001 Ford pickup was traveling on the inner loop in the area of Liberty Road. The Ford left the travel portion, continued on the right shoulder and struck Kahl critically injuring him.
According to officials, Kahl was employed by Erosion Control and Landscape Service, Inc., a company that is subcontracted for the State Highway Administration.
Police say two other workers were at the scene alongside Kahl. They were not injured.
Due to the severity of the crash, troopers closed the inner loop of the beltway in the area of Liberty Road for several hours Friday afternoon.
The cause of the crash is currently unknown. The vehicle's speed has not been determined.
Police state charges are pending. The MSP CRASH Team continues to investigate.
