Maryland State Police say one person is dead and four others are injured due to a single-vehicle car crash in Washington County Thursday afternoon.

Police reported to the scene of a vehicle crash that involved a van from the ARC of Washington County that drove east on US 40. They say "for unknown reasons" the van drove away from the road onto the grass median and striking a tree.

Officials confirmed that there appeared to be no braking of the van before hitting the tree.

The passenger, 71-year-old David Ingram and a resident of ARC of Washington County, was in the front seat when he was trapped inside the van. Ingram was later transported to Meritus Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The driver and three other passengers were also taken to Meritus Medical Center for their injuries.

Police are investigating the cause of the collision.
