Police won't say exactly where or who, only that an off duty Baltimore city police officer was shot just before 11:30 Wednesday night.
County police responded to the officer's Woodlawn home where they say the shooting happened just after someone knocked at his front door.
"Before he had a chance to open it, someone fired through the door and the bullet struck the victim," said Baltimore County Police Spokeswoman Elise Armacost.
The officer, shot inside his home and through his door will survive and is currently in an area hospital.
County police will not give a street where this happened, simply the area around the Essex Road Corridor near Woodlawn Middle School.
As far as a motive, county detectives are stumped.
"Our investigation shows nothing to indicate that this shooting was connected to any wrong-doing on the part of the officer. We are not clear yet on exactly why this shooting occurred or what the motive was," Armacost said.
Police do believe this off-duty officer was targeted but do not know if it may be related to prior police work in the city.
Baltimore city police will only say the officer is a veteran and assigned to patrol.
Police are withholding his address due to safety concerns.
