Schools are back in session throughout Maryland and many are wondering if the later start this year made an economic impact on the state like many leaders claimed.
Despite two days of rain, The Maryland State Fair in Timonium reported a 20% increase in attendance compared to last year. This was the third best attendance on record for the fair with 555,841 guests who visited.
"The return of schools after Labor Day not only increases our attendance but reduces the stress..." said Maryland State Fair Assistant General Manager Becky Brashear.
1990 was the top record year with 618,998 in attendance when schools started after Labor Day and weather was good.
Officials also said there was a significant increase in attendance and wagering during the Thoroughbred Horse Racing days.
Governor Larry Hogan and Comptroller Peter Franchot led the charge of "Let Summer Be Summer" by mandating that schools return after Labor Day.
