Maryland State Fair rides inspected ahead of opening day

TIMONIUM, Md. (WMAR) - The Maryland State Fair kicks off Thursday and along with setting up the booths for food and games, the rides are going up.

The tragedy at the Ohio State Fair has made ride inspectors even more careful when it comes to assembling and inspecting fair favorites. Inspections began last week as soon as the rides started to arrive at the State Fairgrounds in Timonium.

The fire ball ride at the Ohio State Fair broke apart in July, killing a man. There's a similar ride at the Maryland State Fair, but the general manager of the attraction said the ride is only five moths old and was not one of the rides slated to cease operations after the incident.

The Maryland State Fair begins Thursday and runs through Labor Day.
