Every year, 1 in 4 women is sexually assaulted on a college campus in the United States, according to a 2015 study.
The Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) in devoted to targeting the problem. In 2001, the organization created the 'College Consortium' to help address sexual assault, rape, domestic and dating violence, and stalking.
MCASA held a Baltimore Regional Campus Training at Morgan State University Tuesday for college administrators, local police, students, and community members. Rape crisis center representatives discussed community outreach, policies, response and, more importantly, communication.
"We're trying to help schools better understand and communicate to their students on how to handle bystander intervention to prevent assaults from taking place, but also help schools better handle safety planning once an assault has taken place," said Chelsea Wiggins, college policy attorney at MCASA.
