Police said someone who knew 21-year-old Ryan Charles Deitrich expressed concern about his well-being and asked police to check on him.

When officers arrived at the scene they found Deitrich outside the home, allegedly threatening them with a knife, according to police.

Police say the officers retreated but then Deitrich, a resident of the 8600 block of Oakleigh Road, allegedly kept coming at them. Fearing for their lives, at least one of the officers discharged a service weapon.

Deitrich was hit multiple times and was taken to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries.

As of Wednesday morning, no further information had been provided about the officer or officers involved.
