Baltimore County’s top elected official is hoping to convince PayPal to bring 400 jobs to the county, after the company withdrew plans to open a global operations center in Charlotte, N.C.
PayPal nixed its plans in North Carolina following passage of a controversial state law that requires transgender residents to use public bathrooms that match the gender on their birth certificates.
“The new law perpetuates discrimination and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture. As a result, PayPal will not move forward with our planned expansion into Charlotte,” Dan Schulman, president and CEO of PayPal, said in a news release.
In his pitch to Schulman, Kamenetz touted the county’s “financial, cyber, software engineering and experience operations talent ready for PayPal to recruit.”

PayPal already has a presence in Hunt Valley. Bill Me Later, which was purchased by eBay/PayPal in 2008, was founded by Baltimore entrepreneurs.
