Her contribution to medical research continues to change the face of medicine today, and Henrietta Lacks will be honored in Baltimore County this weekend.
In 1951, doctors at Johns Hopkins took Lacks' cells without her consent during a diagnostic procedure. Now, some of her family members are calling for financial compensation for her descendants.
A tribute to Lacks will be held Saturday, July 29 in Turners Station, where she lived. County Executive Kevin Kamenetz will proclaim the first Saturday in August will now be known as "Henrietta Lacks Day" in Baltimore County. He will ceremonially dedicate Main Street and New Pittsburgh Avenue as Henrietta Lacks Lane.
