Fallen Heroes Day honors Prince George's Co. firefighter John Ulmschneider

The 32nd annual Fallen Heroes Day ceremony will honor Prince George's County Firefighter John Ulmschneider on Friday.

Ulmschneider was shot and killed in April 2016 when he and his partner responded to a welfare call at the home of a man reported to be suffering from a medical emergency. The man shot at the medics, killing 37-year-old Ulmschneider, a 13-year veteran of the department.

The ceremony will also honor three first responders killed before Fallen Heroes Day was established in 1986.

Honored this year will be two Baltimore County firefighters who died in the February 1955 Westgate Shopping Center fire located in Catonsville: Captain William J. Miller and Firefighter Carl S. Dill.

Maryland State Trooper Gregg Presbury will also be remembered. He died from a gunshot wound sustained during a traffic stop on Route 30 near Glen Burnie in December 1977.

Following memorial addresses, there will be a presentation to the families of the fallen, and a wreath laying at the Fallen Heroes Memorial. The ceremony will conclude with the children of the fallen heroes placing a wreath at the memorial wall A 21-gun salute, the playing of "Taps" and a flyover will follow.

Around 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, including families, friends, emergency responders and community leaders.

Memorial address begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium.
