TOWSON, Md. - Baltimore County police are investigating four fatal crashes that took place over the last four days.
The most recent occurred Monday afternoon and involved a motor scooter in Lansdowne.
At 2:46 p.m., police and fire personnel responded to Hollins Ferry Road and Hammonds Ferry Road for a report of a serious crash. The initial investigation into this incident has indicated that a Honda CRV was traveling eastbound on Hollins Ferry Road. A motor scooter was traveling northbound on Hammonds Ferry Road. The two vehicles collided in the intersection of the two roads.
The operator of the motor scooter – Derrick Lawson, 33, of the 2900 block of Grantley Ave. – was transported to St. Agnes Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Prior to that, police and fire crews responded at 11:47 p.m. Saturday to a report of a crash in Essex. This accident occurred at the intersection of Back River Neck Road and Poles Road where a pedestrian was struck by a 2000 Volkswagen Passat.
The initial investigation into this incident has indicated that a pedestrian was crossing Back River Neck Road from east to west. The Volkswagen Passat was traveling southbound on Back River Neck Road and struck the pedestrian. The pedestrian – Bert Bush, 35, of the 300 block of Bentalou Court - was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital where he was later declared dead.
Investigators believe that pedestrian error may be a factor in the crash.
Less than an hour before that crash, another fatal accident occurred in Woodbrook.
At 10:58 p.m., police and fire crews responded to Bellona Avenue and Charles Street for a report of a serious automobile accident. There, they found a 1971 Chevrolet Nova on its roof.
The initial investigation into this incident has indicated that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Bellona Avenue north of Brightside Avenue. The vehicle began to skid, crossed the center line, hit the curb, and rolled onto its roof.
The driver – John Kelly, 59, of the 400 block of Vanable Ave. – was declared dead at the scene.
The final accident took place around 3:23 p.m. Friday in Owings Mills.
In that case, crews responded to the 11800 block of Greenspring Ave. for a report of a serious automobile accident. Upon arriving, officers discovered two vehicles that had hit head-on.
The initial investigation into this incident has indicated that a 1990 Honda Civic was traveling northbound on Greenspring Avenue north of Caves Road. A 2008 Honda Pilot was traveling southbound on Greenspring Avenue approaching the Civic. The Civic crossed the center line and struck the Pilot head-on.
The driver of the Honda Civic was transported to Sinai Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. He has been identified as 73-year-old Peter Winkenwerder of the 3700 block of Belmont Ave.
There were no other injuries reported that required transportation to a medical facility.
