Several Baltimore County government officials say they've received notices this month from federal prosecutors saying their communications were intercepted as part of a wiretap investigation in 2013 and 2014.

“A number of County employees and offices have been informed that their phone numbers appeared in a federal wiretap investigation in 2013,” Baltimore County spokesperson Ellen Kobler confirmed. “The employees have been assured that they are under no investigation whatsoever, but simply that their phone number appeared in the phone records of the individual under investigation.”

Dave Fitz, spokesperson for the FBI in Baltimore said, “after a wiretap is completed, the government is required by statute (18 USC, Section 2518) to notify anyone whose communications were intercepted, including persons who were not targets of the investigation but who spoke with the target during communications that were intercepted.”

He said there’s no public record of who received the letters, and was unable to comment further.
