TIMONIUM, Md. - An astronaut from Cockeysville will be recognized Wednesday in Baltimore County as he prepares to launch into space.
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz will proclaim today “Reid Wiseman Day” during an event at Dulaney High School, Wiseman’s alma mater, to watch the launch. Wiseman, a 1993 graduate of Dulaney, will launch into space aboard a Soyuz spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazsakhstan, the start of a six-month visit to the International Space Station.
The launch party at Dulaney will include activities for students and adults designed by the school's science students, live video of the launch, and insight and discussions from former NASA astronaut Dr. Donald Thomas.
Wiseman is a Navy aviator and veteran combat fighter pilot, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in 2004. He completed astronaut candidate training in May 2011, and his assignment as a flight engineer aboard Soyuz 40 will be his first flight into space.
