Baltimore County fire investigators are trying to figure out why a fatal car fire started Thursday afternoon in Parkville.

According to a spokeswoman, one man is dead.

Witnesses say when they realized the fire started, some people tried getting out of the back seat of the van, but because of the intense flames, there was nothing they could do.

A witness says when she pulled into the Parkway Plaza off Perring Parkway, smoke was billowing out of a navy blue minivan.

A short time later, firefighters and police got to the scene.

"I was coming from the store and when I came passed, I could still see the smoke and then it just burst into flames after the smoke came out so it was horrible," Marva Montague, a witness, said.

At about 4 p.m., firefighters hadn't yet removed the man out the van and they haven't identified who he is.

A spokeswoman with the Baltimore County Fire Department says investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
