Crews were working to repair a 20-inch water main on York Road in Cockeysville that broke Sunday night for most of Tuesday.
The water main break, located at 13801 York Road near McCormick and Phoenix Roads, caused major traffic delays and affected several area businesses.
Officials with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) said contractors experienced delays on Monday “due to the presence of a high-pressure gas main near the water main.” Crews were able to isolate the gas main and began replacing the affected portion of the pipe early Tuesday afternoon.
“Work will continue as efficiently and safely as possible until the fix is secure and we are able to begin recharging the main with water,” DPW officials said in a news release.

Residents in the area, including the Broadmead Retirement Center, have reported water outages and low water pressure. Water levels in two area holding tanks have also fallen due to the break. DPW said crews refilled the Mays Chapel reservoir by pumping water from Towson, yet a water tower in Sparks has not yet been refilled.
Once the main is fixed, it’ll take additional time for water service to be fully restored, according to the DPW.

Baltimore County Police said residents in need of water can fill up at the Texas Fire Station #17, located at 9835 York Road in Cockeysville. Locals have permission to use the unattended hose on the parking lot side of the station.
In addition, residents are being advised to:
• Use water only as necessary by limiting washing machine and dishwasher use and flushing toilets.
• Do not do outside watering, car washing, power washing etc.
• Customers who have lost water service should allow water to run through a sink or tub faucet, until it is clear, once service is restored. DPW will also open fire hydrants to clear the water lines.
Baltimore County Police said additional questions about repairs to the water main should be made to the Baltimore City Water Department at 410-396-5352.
