EDGEWATER, Md. - The body of a 26-year-old Salvadoran man was pulled from Almhouse Creek in Edgewater Saturday night.
Natural Resources Police (NRP) identified the man as Jorge Majano. Police Spokeswoman Candy Thomas said around 7 p.m. Majano and some friends were wading in the creek when they decided to swim across. Majano went under and never resurfaced.
His body was located by sonar and pulled from the water around 9:30pm. It was taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
If the death is ruled a drowning, it will be the 17th drowning investigated by NRP this year. Last year there were 19 total drownings.
Thomas said police are concerned about the number of drownings and are fighting an uphill battle to educate the public about water safety. “You can’t legislate it and you can’t tell everybody to stay out of the water,” she said.
