Hundreds of volunteers from across Maryland worked side-by-side to harvest more than 20,000 pounds of potatoes Saturday afternoon to directly support the ongoing hurricane recovery effort in Texas.
Volunteers who represent a variety of groups and organizations, including schools, churches, businesses, even the US Coast Guard began harvesting the potatoes around 9 a.m.
At 3 p.m. a tractor-trailer was loaded with 400 bags of potatoes, equating to more than 20,000 pounds for Hurricane Harvey relief.
The event took place at First Fruits Farm, an all-volunteer nonprofit that provides one million pounds of fresh produce each year for distribution to those who desperately need it.
This emergency effort also involved the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the Archdiocese of West Virginia, and the Archdiocese of Houston.
