Concerns over a virus that causes serious birth defects has been renewed after four new cases were found in Florida, transmitted by a local mosquito carrying Zika.
The Baltimore Health Department said they have an action plan already working to prevent further spread of the infection.
Doctor Leana Wen, Health Commissioner of Baltimore City, said there are several groups surveying mosquitos and people who return to Maryland after traveling to infected areas.
"I think it's scary, like Ebola and stuff. It's just becoming a reality," Marylander Robert Merz said.
Dr. Wen said there's several steps everyone can take to prevent the spread of Zika.
1. Ensure you do not have any standing water near your home. (Mosquitos only need the amount of water in a bottle cap to breed.)
2. Make sure your screens on your windows do not have holes.
3. Use bug repellant.
4. Educate yourself with Zika symptoms.
"Look in your yard, today, take out any pet bowls that have standing water, trash cans that aren't covered," Dr. Wen added.
Eighty percent of adults who get Zika, do not have symptoms. The virus can be spread through sex, in both women and men.
Right now officials do not know the long lasting effects of the virus.
