Noah's Law, which requires anyone convicted of impaired driving to install an ignition interlock system in their car, goes into effect Saturday, Oct. 1.

The consequences behind a DUI or DWI can be significant, whether it be in points, damage or a suspended license.

MVA administrator Chrissy Nizer said the first thing that happens following an impaired driving conviction is a suspended license.

"Your license will be suspended," MVA administration Chrissy Nizer said. "Depends on the violation how long that license will be suspended."

Once that happens, it's a long road back for offenders.

"It is very difficult to recover from," she said. "There's a lot of cost that are associated with it and it takes awhile for someone to get back on their feet."

In addition, Nizer said you have to worry about the points - eight or 12 in some cases, which is a lot. But, she says, there is a way to improve your driving record before you even go before the judge.

"Theres also the ability to opt into ignition interlock on the administrative side even before someone goes to court," Nizer said.
