Underground explosion forces evacuations in Northeast Baltimore

BALTIMORE - A explosion underground in Northeast Baltimore forced evacuations Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. in the 2700 block of Harford Road. Officials say an underground electrical conduit exploded, blowing two manhole covers off the road.  One of the covers damaged a street lamp.

The explosion also knocked out several windows in a nearby home.

Nobody was hurt and officials evacuated the area for a short time until they determined what caused the manhole covers to blow off.
