UMMC performs rare full face transplant

BALTIMORE (WMAR) - The University of Maryland announced today that they have completed a full face transplant on a 37-year-old man.

The 36-hour operation included a double jaw and tongue transplant and took place at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a team of faculty physicians from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Officials have not released any additional details about the patient or his condition, but say they plan to next week.

The first full face transplant in the United States was performed in 2011 in Boston on a Fort Worth, Texas construction worker who burned his face off in 2008 by touching power lines.
