The United States Postal Service unveiled its Alzheimer's Semipostal Fundraising Stamp in a dedication ceremony Thursday.

Kathy Siggins of Mount Airy, Md. was also honored at the dedication ceremony, she advocated for and submitted the suggestion for the stamp.

Siggins lost her husband to the disease in 1999.

The stamp will be sold for 60 cents. 11 cents of each sale will go towards research funding.

It’s the first in a series of five fundraising stamps to be issued in the next 10 years.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Alzheimer's is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. More than 5.3 Million Americans 65 and older are estimated to have the disease.

"With continued public awareness and support and the commitment of talented people, someday Alzheimer's will join the growing list of well understood, manageable and even curable diseases," said Postmaster General Megan Brennan.

There are currently two other fundraising stamps available for purchase. The Breast Cancer Research Semipostal has raised more than $86 Million dollars and the Save Vanishing Species Stamp has raised nearly $4.4 Million dollars.
