A college student didn't come to Baltimore by car or plane or bus. She came on a tall ship.
Samantha Wilt is a transfer student to Towson University from the College of Southern Maryland and a volunteer on the Maryland Dove.
The Dove, a replica of the 17th century pinnace, a merchant vessel, came to Maryland with its sister vessel the Ark in 1635. They brought over Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron of Baltimore, on its first expedition from England to the planned colony of Maryland.
As a volunteer for the last five years, Wilt assists in the maintenance and repairs and sailing of the tall ship.
"I started when I was really young and I don't know I just love learning about the history of Maryland, which I've lived in my whole life. Working with everybody, sailing and being on the open water with square sails, there is just so much to experience and knowledge to gain."
While normally joined by her older sister, this is Wilt's maiden voyage as the only woman on the crew.
The 'Maryland Dove' will be docked at Pier One, Friday through Aug. 29 and is open to the public.
