City police were called to the alley behind Edgecombe Circle just before 1 1a.m. Saturday for reports of a dog bite. When officers arrived, we're told they found two unconfined, aggressive pit bulls.
Investigators say the pair escaped from their yard, scratching and cutting a 6-year-old girl, and two boys, ages 7 and 9.
Officers tried to corral the canines, but shot them after both dogs charged. One pit bull was killed at the scene, the owner of the other says he died later that day.
"I ran home to my dog bleeding out on my kitchen floor,” she said. “I'm hurt, I’m very numb, and I’m hurt, I can't even put it into words, I can't stop crying."
She says Major and Savage are brothers, both four years old. The pets were in the yard of her house when everything went down Saturday.
According to police, the children were playing in the alley when one dog jumped the fence, and the other squeezed out.
"We've been living around here for almost 9-years or so, and I’ve never had no issues with my dogs,” the owner said. “My neighbors never have an issue with my dogs, my dogs never got out this gate."
The three children the animals attacked did not go to the hospital, they were treated by city paramedics for small scrapes and lacerations. ABC2 News spoke with their mother Sunday, she didn't want to go on-camera, but tells us the kids are okay.
"Thank God that they're fine, I am very thankful,” said the dog’s owner. “But they didn't have to kill my babies, they didn't have to kill my babies, they weren't just dogs to me."
Police say the pair was aggressive. While the owner maintains her dog Major and his brother Savage were playful and spoiled, saying they've never had any issue with the dogs getting out or hurting anyone.
"He greeted us in the morning when we came down them steps, he sat at the kitchen doorway while we cooked, while we cleaned dishes, they was not vicious dogs."
The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Detectives from the Special Investigations Response Team are looking into the officers firing their guns.
