A suspect is in serious condition after being hit by a car during a robbery attempt Monday night.
Baltimore Police said the victim hit the suspect, but then called police and tried to help the injured man who'd just tried to rob him.
Around 6 p.m., the man got into his car in the 200 block of Clay Street and so did an unwanted passenger.
“While he was parked there, an unknown individual jumped into the passenger seat and announced a robbery,” said Baltimore City Police Detective Donny Moses.
The driver put his car, a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, in gear but then more people tried to jump into the car.
“Two more suspects approached from the driver's side and assaulted him and ultimately robbed him, taking his cell phone and money,” Moses said.
Once the two suspects took what he had, they ran away, but the first suspect who jumped in on the passenger side tried to make his escape after the victim had already started to drive away.
The driver tried to get away by driving forward on Clay Street, but the Light Rail blocked his path, so he put the car in reverse and at some point hit the suspect who was also trying to get away.
The driver realized what had happened, stopped the car and called for help
“The one suspect remained at the scene suffering from numerous injuries. Ironically, the victim in this case stopped, called police, and actually attempted to help the suspect,” Moses said. “Had the victim driven away, everyone would've completely understood, but he stayed and he went above and beyond to actually try to help somebody that meant to do him harm.”
The suspect was taken to Shock Trauma and is expect to survive. He will be charged once he is released from the hospital, according to police.
Police are hoping cameras in the area will provide more information about the two others who got away. Both are described as black males who look to be in their 40's.
