Motorists caught going over the speed limit in a work zone on the Inner Loop of I-695 will be ticketed starting Thursday.

Speed cameras were set up on eastbound I-695 between Bel Air Road and Philadelphia Road on June 9, with warning signs in place alerting drivers of their speeds and encouraging motorists to slow down.

After a 21-day wait period, Maryland State Police will begin issuing citations to anyone driving 12 or more miles over the 55 mph speed limit. The citation comes with a $40 fine, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The new rule is part of the Maryland SafeZones initiative, which aims to “make work zones safer environments for workers, driver and passengers.”

Construction at the I-95/I-695 interchange will realign I-695 from US 1 to MD 7. Officials said the project will be complete by the fall.
