A new batch of students have enrolled into the Port Covington Manufactoring Bootcamp since it was launched last year.

During an open house Thursday, Sagamore Development Company, Mayor Catherine Pugh and other community leaders celebrated the second class of 16 students who started on Feb. 7.

"We look forward to these individuals here, that are here today saying: 'not only do we want an opportunity, we'll take the opportunity if you provide it for us,'" the mayor said.

Sagamore Development started the training program in November 2016 with its first class of eight students, who graduated in Jan.

The program helps equip people with the skills they need to explore job opportunities and start careers in manufacturing.

The class will go through a six-week course led by The Foundery and the Center for Urban Families (CFUF).

Once the students get to the final week of the Port Covington Manufactoring Bootcamp, they will choose a specialized manufacturing skill to showcase in a final project in order to meet local employers and discuss potential employment.

Sagamore Development, Whiting-Turner and The Commercial Group are sponsors of the program.
