Recent storms delay sinkhole repair

BALTIMORE - Officials with the Baltimore Department of Public Works say recent weather has caused additional sinkholes in an area crews were already working to repair on Monument Street.

Due to the issues, DPW director Alfred H. Foxx said sinkhole and storm drain repair near 2330 Monument Street will not be completed until December 19.

The original storm drain damage that resulted from the 40 foot sinkhole created on July 25, 2012, required 140 feet of the 120-year-old storm drain to be repaired.

Two subsequent sinkhole incidents near the original location on August 26, 2012 and October 4, 2012, tripled the original amount to be repaired to 423 feet.

Officials say Hurricane Sandy created no additional damage.

"We understand and recognize the inconvenience this incident has created for the merchants and community," Foxx said. "The Department will continue to meet regularly with those directly affected and work on the repair 24 hours, seven days a week until the job is complete."
