Protest planned after Zimmerman trial verdict

BALTIMORE (WMAR) - A local activist group is calling for Baltimoreans to show their outrage if George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman accused of shooting and killing Trayvon Martin, is acquitted or receives a lesser offense.

The Baltimore People's Power Assembly and Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Baltimore are planning a protest the day after the verdict is read.

The protest will be held at McKeldin Square at Light and Pratt Streets at 5:00 p.m.

"We are issuing this emergency call prior to the verdict because we have little faith in the so-called justice system which is riddled with racism and class bias," said Steven Ceci, protest organizer.

"We will be calling on the federal government to file criminal charges on the basis of civil rights violations," said Rev. CD Witherspoon with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Baltimore. "This was done immediately after the Rodney King verdict, and should be done if justice is not rendered by the Florida courts," he said.
